PALEO-CRYPTO-KARSTS IN THE UBANGUI BASIN (Centrafrican Republic) - The occurrence of many indications of carbonated bed formations had been reported by numerous naturalists, and more particularly the presence of a lot of closed basins, which look like dolines, spreaded out in superficial weathered formations. This permits to presume the existence of ancient crypto-karsts in the Ubangui basin. The show off by well drilling of the so-called Bakouma sequence, which is carbonated, at the end of the sixties, confirmed the existence of a very old paleokarst. Others could exist, especially where closed basins open out on the surface. The problem is to know which part is due to the karst withdrawing in the form elaboration. The authors suggest making researches into water analysis for the first results achieved on the Ubangi basin are encouraging. At last thanks the cross-checking of the numerous indications, a first cartography of the carbonated formations in the Centrafrican Republic is proposed.

This map is build on the distinction of many types of karsts (table 1), according to the following standards: structural control (lithology, tectonics: folded or tabular), geomorphology (mountain, plateau, cuesta, etc.), bio-climatic conditions, clastic covers and inheritances. The second part shows the regional distribution of the karst types and areas, lists their main features and studies the conditions of the present evolution (solution rates, see table 1) and the effects of the paleo-geomorphological inheritances and paleokarsts.

Meaning and representation of boundaries in karst type maps, 2001, Angsü, Sser Stephan

The paper deals with boundaries in general and specifically with boundaries in large scale karst type maps. On the basis of a differentiation into dependent and independent variables a methodological attempt is presented, allowing to integrate information about the boundary type and the boundary accuracy. This additional information should help karst researchers answering genetic questions.

Interest of the morphogenesis approach to improve the knowledge of a high-value heritage: Chauvet cave (Ardche, France) - This paper describes the shapes and cave deposits of the Chauvet cave. Especially, the geomorphologic approach improves the global understanding of the Chauvet cave characteristics while Man and animal prehistoric occupancies. Access to the cave, painting location in the cave, and finally cave closing, are discussed on geomorphologic basis to answer the questions asked by prehistorians and archaeologists. The ultimate goal of this paper is to enhance the contribution of the geomorphologic high resolution mapping to the prehistoric investigations. To answer the three questions above, we used shapes and deposits to relate the past cave environments. Soil detailed map allows to describe deposits and shapes in a stratigraphic approach. Some U/Th dating complete the chronology especially during Man and animal occupancy; thus, the closing of the prehistoric entrance has been dated older than 15000 years. Also, this paper shows the interest of crossing the disciplinary approaches in the understanding of such a complex scientific object: the Chauvet cave, a high value Man heritage

Etude de la karstification partir des donnes de forages : le cas des Monts de Tlemcen (Algrie), 2007, Bensaoula Fouzia
STUDY OF KARSTIFICATION FROM BOREHOLE DATA. THE CASE OF THE TLEMCEN MOUNTAINS. The Tlemcen mountains are the second largest carbonate massif in the north-west of Algeria, after the one of the Saida mountains. It is a large horst structure trending NE-SW, composed mainly of Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous formations. The aquifers within it constitute the main water resource of the area. They are tapped by more than 160 boreholes, which constitute a great tool for studying the karst, especially its phreatic part. In the holes made by conventional drills, the total loss of drilling mud indicate karstification. The registration of the altitude of those losses permit to recognize the fissured and karstified levels. Three different aspects of karstifications were observed: an important fracturation, seen by complete loss of drilling mud during the drilling, important caves, observed by the free fall of drilling tools, and caves filled by karstic sediments, found thanks to diagraphies and the study of material brought up by the drilling. A statistical analysis of these data permitted to evidence the following elements: The dolomitic facies is much more dominant than the limestone facies; The frequency of incidences slowly decreases with depth; The fracturation is most important in the first 120 to 130 m below the top of the karstified formations, although it does not disappear at depth. In the breakdown zone of Tlemcen, situated in the northern piedmont part of the Tlemcen mountain, 26 boreholes permitted to draw an isopach map of the thickness of the karstic cover as well as the top of the karstified formation. This one shows two hollow zones below 100 m depth in the SW and NE parts. The top of the jurassic carbonates shows a very irregular surface which might correspond to a karstic paleorelief that was drowned by the Miocene transgression. Finally, the last map shows a karstified surface that can possibly be connected to a pseudo-paleo-piezometric surface.

Laser Scanning Technology for the Hypogean Survey: the case of Santa Barbara Karst System (Sardinia, Italy), 2011, Canevese Erminio Paolo, Forti Paolo , Naseddu Angelo, Ottelli Luciano, Tedeschi Roberta

The morphological knowledge of the territory, both in its surface and subterranean aspects, is the main premise to all decision-making procedures as well as all planning and management activities. Knowledge takes shape into reliable precise and complete thematic cartography and databases, which are necessary for anybody dealing with underground contexts: speleologists, scientists, public administrations, managing authorities etc.
Surveys in caves are normally carried out with traditional techniques and instruments, which are essential for a first representation but not enough for a pragmatic effective topographic approach. Laser scanning technique can be an alternative to the traditional systems. Laser scanning quickly acquires the shape of cavities as “point clouds” (x, y, z coordinates and colour values) and produces a high precision database of the surveyed object. Laser scanning technology is therefore a feasible way to document caves in a precise exhaustive way, limiting risks relating to lack and/or inadequacy of data.
The present paper explains the laser scanning survey carried out in San Giovanni mine near Iglesias (Sardinia, Italy), particularly in Santa Barbara and Santa Barbara 2 caves, the data post-processing and three-dimensional modelling of “point clouds” (operations performed with a dedicated software), and
the use of the obtained digital model. Moreover, the paper describes
the advantages of laser scanning for the hypogean survey
in comparison to traditional methods and the future potentialities
of a broad application of laser scanning instruments
in caves.

PaPRIKa: a method for estimating karst resource and source vulnerabilityapplication to the Ouysse karst system (southwest France) , 2011, Kavouri Konstantina, Plagnes Valerie, Tremoulet Joel, Dorfliger Nathalie, Rejiba Faycal, Marchet Pierre

The intrinsic vulnerability mapping method, PaPRIKa, is proposed as a common basis for karst groundwater protection in France. PaPRIKa is a specialized method for studying karst aquifers, derived from updating the RISKE and EPIK methods. Both the structure and functioning of karst aquifers are considered in order to develop a resource and source-vulnerability mapping method. PaPRIKa means Protection of aquifers from the assessment of four criteria: P for protection (considering the most protective aspects among parameters related to soil cover, unsaturated zone and epikarst behavior), R for rock type, I for infiltration and Ka for karstification degree. The Ouysse karst system, located in the Causses area in southwest France, is one of the nine pilot sites where this method was tested and standardized. The specificities of the Ouysse system such as the size of the catchment area, the spatial variability of the karst network development, the thick infiltration zone and the system’s dual character (both karst and non-karst areas), have provided a valuable field of application. The vulnerability of the resource was assessed for the entire catchment area, while source-orientated cartography was attempted for the catchment areas of the three different capture works used for drinking water.


Digital elevation models (DEM) are digital representations of topography that are especially suitable for numerical terrain analysis in earth sciences and engineering. One of the main quantitative uses of DEM is the automatic delineation of flow networks and watersheds in hydrology and geomorphology. In these applications (using both low­resolution and precision DEM) depressions hinder the inference of pathways and a lot of work has been done in designing algorithms that remove them so as to generate depression­free digital elevation models with no interruptions to flow. There are, however, geomorphological environments, such as karst terrains, in which depressions are singular elements, on scales ranging from centimetres to kilo­metres, which are of intrinsic interest. The detection of these depressions is of significant interest in geomorphologic map­ping because the development of large depressions is normal in karst terrains: potholes, blind valleys, dolines, uvalas and poljes. The smallest depressions that can be detected depend on the spatial resolution (pixel size) of the DEM. For example, depressions from centimetres to a few metres, such as some types of karren, cannot be detected if the raster digital eleva­tion model has a spatial resolution greater than, say, 5 m (i.e., square 5m pixel). In this work we describe a method for the au­tomatic detection and delineation of terrain depressions. First, we apply a very efficient algorithm to remove pits from the DEM. The terrain depressions are then obtained by subtract­ing the depression­free DEM from the original DEM. The final product is a digital map of depressions that facilitates the cal culation of morphometric features such as the geometry of the depressions, the mean depth of the depressions, the density of depressions across the study area and the relationship between depressions and other variables such as altitude. The method is illustrated by applying it to data from the Sierra de las Nieves karst massif in the province of Málaga in Southern Spain. This is a carbonate aquifer that is drained by three main springs and in which the depressions play an important role in the recharge of the aquifer. A doline density map, produced from a map of 324 detected dolines/uvalas, identifies three main recharge areas of the three springs. Other morphometric results related to the size and direction of the dolines are also presented. Finally the dolines can be incorporated into a geomorphology map.
