SPELEOLOGY OF THE FANGES-ROC PARADET MOUNTAIN KARST (AUDE /EASTERN PYRENEES, FRANCE) - The Fanges-Roc Paradet Mountain karst (S = 40 km2) contains a large underground cave, the " Cthulhu Dmoniaque-Puits de lEngoulevent " system (L = 13km, D = -302m). This region of Fenouilldes is characterized by a mediterranean climate and presents different surface karst features (pavements, depressions, dry valleys). Synthesis data are given in hydrogeology and speleology. The complexity of subterranean drainage and caves can be explained by an old karstification begun during the mio-pliocene uplift, from an eogene peneplain. The association Arkham co-ordinates the researches and prepares some publications.

Hydrogeology: marine resurgences, subterranean rivers (Port-Miou and Le Bestouan).

The Bossea Cave has a great interest from the point of view of nature and the environment because many karst and speleogenetic processes are still active. The water stream flowing in the cave was the determining factor of some picturesque morphologies and splendid scenographic effects. An underground laboratory for experimental researches (the "Bossea Scientific Station") was established in the cave and is operating since 1969 (Biological Section) and 1982 (Physical Section). The cave has been explored and studied since 1850 and opened to the public in 1874. At present its exploitation can be furtherly emphasized. For this purpose a programme was prepared according the following items: 1; rearrangement of the tourist facilities 2; best exploitation of internal hydrography 3; creation of alternative trails 4; improvement of the scientific facilities 5; creation of new outside facilities 6; preparation of literature and visual aids. The goals of the Scientific Station installed inside the cave and the results achieved are described by Guido Peano, laboratory director; the cave exploitation project, concerning both the scientific and tourist facilities, is due to Giorgio Fisanotti.

During the symposium ALCADI 96 in Postojna, professor Yvan GAMS appealed to all the participants to study the way in which the notion of "Karst" had been introduced into respective countries and adopted by speleologists and geographers. In France, the specific phenomenons of the eponymic Karst, as the Zirknitz Lake (Cerknisko Jezero), have been known about and described since the end of the 16th century. But it required a big step to go from these descriptions to an understanding that the Karst might be a model capable of explaining the hydrology and morphology of such regions. In the early 19th century, naturalists and geologists began to recognise the particularities of the hydrography in limestone regions, and went as far as to propose the Jura or the Causses as models. In 1879, probably for the first lime, Marius Bouvier, a French civil engineer, used Karst as a pattern to explain and describe the impluvium of the famous Vaucluse spring (Provence). It is known that E.-A. Martel disliked this word of "karst" and argued strongly in favour of "causse"; but despite this, Cvijic was generally considered most representative, and Karst was quickly adopted for all the scientific french works.

Karst (vaucluse) springs, transporting water from fissure-karst systems, result from karst development in the area. At the same time, they are the main source of information on the hydrography of the investigated karst area. Continuous monitoring of groundwaters and surface waters in the Tatra Mountains in Poland takes place for a long time. In the mid-70-ties, the team of Prof. D. Malecka organized an observation network, with water marks along the main Tatra streams right to their outlets from the massif, and with observation points of the largest springs and vaucluse springs. Readings from water marks were collected several times each month by the observers (usually Tatra National Park employees). In 1998 the National Committee for Scientific Research approved a three-year research project entitled: "Determination of retention abilities and the dynamics of denudation in the karst areas of the Polish Tatra Mountains basing on stationary investigations of vaucluse springs". In accordance with this project, between November and December 1998 automatic limnimeters were installed in selected vaucluse (five) springs.


Potential impact of a proposed railway tunnel on the karst environment: the example of Rosandra valley, Classical Karst Region, Italy-Slovenia, 2011, Zini Luca , Visintin Luca, Cucchi Franco, Boschin Walter

Val Rosandra is a unique geomorphological environment located on the western side of the Classical Karst Plateau (NE Italy). This deep limestone gorge is crossed by a stream that is fed by a large basin located in Slovenia. Val Rosandra is the only example of a karst river valley with surface hydrography in the Classical Karst Plateau. The torrent that crosses it digs a deep gully into the rock, rich in rapids, swirl holes, small waterfalls, enclosed meanders and basins; here, the first seepage phenomena occur, and part of the water feeds the underground aquifer.Val Rosandra is characterised by a complex structural situation. The NE slope culminates in the structure of Mt. Stena, a limestone tectonic wedge between two faults, firmly rooted in the karst platform. Both its external morphology and its caves are influenced by the structure, i.e. by the attitude of bedding planes, fault planes and master joints. Mt. Stena, in particular, hosts a comprehensive net of articulated and diversely shaped caves, basically organised on several levels. This network stretches over a total of 9,000 metres, bearing testimony to ancient geological and hydrogeological origins.The deepest areas of the system reach a suspended aquifer that is probably sustained by an overthrust and placed about 100 meters above the underground aquifer of the Rosandra torrent.A series of feasibility studies on the Trieste-Divača high-speed railway link concentrated on the potential interaction between the project and karst features. In line with the project requirements, risk of voids intersection and water contamination were analyzed as Mt. Stena’s suspended aquifer partially feeds the Rosandra torrent, which flows in a protected natural area. We therefore suggest that further investigations ought to be performed to integrate the existing knowledge on karst and on the hydrogeological aspects of the massif.
