Symposium on Hierarchical Flow Systems in Karst Regions: deadline extended till March 18

Author Speleogenesis News Manager. Posted on 26 Feb, 2013

Dear Colleagues,

The deadline for abstract submission for the “International Symposium on Hierarchical Flow Systems in Karst Regions”, to be held during 4-7 September 2013 in Budapest, Hungary, is extended till March 18. You havemore than two weeks to put your  karst research in a flow system context.

This important event is being organized by the Regional Groundwater Flow Commission of International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH), Karst Commission of IAH, Karst Hydrogeology and Speleogenesis Commission of International Union of Speleology, and Hungarian National Chapter of IAH.

The main objective of the Symposium is to promote the integration of the theory of hierarchical flow systems into karst hydrogeology.

Main Topics and planned Sessions:

  1. Groundwater flow patterns and hydraulics in karst: theoretical issues, flow characterization and modeling, specific attributes of recharge and discharge regions
  2. Recharge and discharge processes and parameters: hydrologic, hydraulic, long and short-term signals and changes; reorganization of drainage basins
  3. Epigene and hypogene karst systems: definitions-characteristics, differences, examples of hierarchical approaches
  4. Flowing groundwater as a geologic agent: alteration of karst-rock matrix by groundwater flow, processes of dissolution and precipitation, development of solution porosity and caves, cave minerals, karst morphologies of recharge and discharge areas
  5. Aqueous geochemistry and microbial karst processes: chemical characterization, natural and environmental tracers, statistical methods, microbial processes in karstification
  6. Managing and economic aspects of karst regions: contaminant problems, petroleum migration and entrapment, thermal and mineral waters, geothermal installations, Mississippi-valley-type ore deposits, CO2 sequestration in flow system context

A training course, named REGFLOW - MANKARST, is organised before the Symposium in accordance with the goals of the scientific program.

See more details at the homepage of the event, and the event page in the Speleogenesis Calendar.

For registration and abstract submission, please use this link.

The training course and the symposium will take place in Budapest, in the capital of spas and caves, which hosts one of the best studied active hypogenic karst systems of the world. The organizers are looking forward to sharing the excitement of exploring these exceptional places together with colleagues from all parts of the world.
